With more and more people calling themselves SEND advocates, it can be really hard to know who to trust when you're already stressed, exhausted, and just trying to get the right support for your child.
First off, what does a SEND advocate actually do?
A SEND advocate is there to support YOU to understand your rights, navigate the system, and have your voice heard. They don't replace you...they walk alongside you. A good advocate will:
*Help you understand the SEND Code of Practice and your legal rights
*Support you to prepare for reviews, and assessments
*Attend meetings with you (and speak up when needed)
*Help you understand reports, EHCPs, and decisions
*Guide you through appeals and tribunal processes
*Always keep your child's best interests at the centre
An advocate is not there to tell you what to do, take over, or make decisions on your behalf. Their role is to empower you.
So, how do you choose wisely?
Here are some questions worth asking before you commit:
* What qualifications or training do they have? (Look for IPSEA qualifications, at least undergraduate degree, law training, or a professional background in SEND)
* Do they have real experience in the education system — not just personal experience as a parent?
* Are they up to date with current legislation and guidance?
* Are they transparent about what they can and can't help with?
*Do they carry professional indemnity insurance?
* Can they provide references or testimonials?
Passion is important. But passion without knowledge can lead families in the wrong direction at critical moments...... and in SEND, the stakes are high.
You deserve someone who knows the law, knows the system, and knows how to fight for your child the right way.
